Have you ever heard the expression “You can’t pour from an empty cup?” Have you ever felt burnt out and overwhelmed from neglecting your own needs? If yes, how did you overcome it and set priorities going forward?
This week we continue our topic about maintaining our identity while remaining empathetic. It’s so easy to get lost in the needs and emotions of others, forgetting and even neglecting our own needs and values. In order to truly care for others, we must care for ourselves and ensure our cup is full.
- How can we maintain our sense of self while still being empathetic towards others?
- What are some practical ways to ensure that our own needs and values are not neglected?
- How can we prioritize and balance so we can effectively care for others?
Here are some tips:
Working within your limits
Have you ever thought of boundaries as limits? Have you ever aligned the idea of boundaries with modesty? I did research on the topic of modesty and what I learned enabled me to feel more comfortable with setting reasonable limits and gentle boundaries (I have a course about how to set Gentle Boundaries)
When we are aware of our limitations and communicate them clearly to others we avoid overcommitting and feeling overwhelmed. By setting boundaries, we can prioritize our own needs and values and ensure that we have the energy and resources to be there for others when they need us!
Prioritizing self-nurture
The concept of self-care is thrown around a lot these days and everyone has lists and ideas. I’m not talking about a mani/pedi. I’m talking about really taking care – things like taking breaks, exercising, practicing relaxation techniques, doing an Aroma Reset or engaging in activities that bring us joy. Our physical, emotional, and mental well-being is necessary to sustain our life. By prioritizing and recharging and are better equipped to care for others. I prefer to call this self-nurturing.
Practicing mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and non-judgmentally observing our thoughts and feelings. It helps us become more aware of our own needs and values and avoid becoming lost in the emotions of others. By practicing mindfulness, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and others, leading to more meaningful relationships.
Try this: Notice your breathing and any tension in your body. Observe your thoughts. What emotions are you feeling in this moment? Take a slow deep breath in and a slow breath out. There, you did an Aroma Reset. How do you feel now?
Power up your reset by adding a natural aroma source like herbs or spices, a flower from your garden or a leaf from a tree if you don’t have high quality essential oils.
Learning to let go
Letting go of things that no longer serve us is a crucial step in maintaining our identity while remaining empathetic. This can include relationships, beliefs, or behaviors that are no longer aligned with our values. By letting go, we can make space for new experiences and relationships that are more in line with who we are and what we value.
Maintaining our identity while remaining empathetic requires setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, practicing mindfulness, and learning to let go. By taking care of ourselves, we can better care for others and build more meaningful relationships. Practice these tips and watch your relationships flourish.
