3 Simple Strategies to Clear Overwhelm and Find Inner Peace
Does it all ever feel too much? Responsibilities, commitments, and life can all seems a bit too much at times. Recently I over-committed to a few too many things and it caused me a bit of panic. Then I was able to pull some tools from my toolbox to help me refocus and get myself on track. I was able to calmly put together a reasonable way to accomplish all I needed to do. Sound good? Here are some tips:

What is Overwhelm?

First, please know that overwhelm is not a weakness or a character flaw. It's a natural response to stress and pressure. Our brains are wired to respond to danger by releasing adrenaline and other stress hormones, which can help us fight or flee.

Stress causes us to act. However, when we are constantly under stress, our bodies can't keep up, and we start to feel overwhelmed. We actually lose the ability to think of how to work through our challenges and plan solutions. Very counterproductive!

What To Do - Tips

So what can we do to overcome overwhelm? Here are some ideas:

1. Take 60 seconds to reset your emotions and nervous system. Connect your emotions, body and thoughts and then breathe. I recommend adding aroma and following the Aroma Reset technique. This will reset your nervous system and move you into a state where you can think of tiny stepping stones. That’s what helped me settle and come into a mental state where I could think of how to work it all out.

2. Practice self-nurture: When we’re overwhelmed, it can be tempting to push ourselves harder and harder, thinking we just need to work harder to get everything done. In reality, self-nuture is essential for our mental and physical health which helps us think clearly and take action at a better pace than if we neglect self-nuture. This could mean taking a moment to look out the window and connect with nature or simply taking a few, slow deep belly breaths. Self-nurture is different than self-care because it’s a way of living, the way we behave. I wrote a whole blog post about simple ways to self-nurture that takes zero extra time in our day. Things like brushing your hair with care and compassion is self-nurture.

3. Seek support: It's okay to ask for help when we're feeling overwhelmed. This could mean reaching out to a friend or family member, joining a support group, or seeking professional help from a therapist or coach. Talking to someone who understands what we're going through can be incredibly helpful in reducing stress and anxiety. If you're feeling overwhelmed, remember that you're not alone. It's okay to take a step back to focus and it will help you in the long run. And if you need help, don't be afraid to ask for it. With time and support, you can overcome overwhelm and find peace from within. What are some strategies that have helped you when you're feeling overwhelmed?
