What are Good Boundaries in a Relationship?

What are Good Boundaries in a Relationship?
Healthy boundaries create strong relationships and foster healthy interconnection. With healthy boundaries, two individuals know themselves and each other and can connect, support, grow, and change. There is connection and space, togetherness and individuation, and interdependence rather than either codependence or independence. Relationships like this flourish and create open, honest, and authentic communication.

Rhythmic Breathing

These tools are various practices based on healing our nervous system and restoring us to a state of calm. All these tools are excerpts from various workshops and classes.

Use this tool to guide rhythmic breathing while you do your reset. It will calm your nervous system and is a good guide during your reset if deep, calm breathing is challenging. You can also use 1:1 breathing to downregulate your fight / flight or upregulate if you're in freeze / shutdown / numb.

Rhythmic Breathing App

There's an app that has adjustable settings you may enjoy for your mobile device called Kardia.

Check the App Story or Google Play Store

It looks like this:

Counted Breathing

Counted breathing works for some BUT that pause also has the potential to activate our nervous system's fight / flight. Denying our body of oxygen for even a moment might activate our survival brain.

Try it to see if it works for you. If not stick with the 1:1 slow, deep breathing.

Grounding Technique

When our fight / flight activates, it pushes us to disconnect if it goes on too long. It can also activate panic if we do not respond to our nervous system's prompt to self-protect.

We begin to disconnect from our body and from the present time as our brain pulls us back in time. Our survival brain does not understand time and actually believes we are experiencing that past situation

Sometimes we didn't tune in soon enough. My emotional balance course and workshop teach how to do that. Notice what signals you missed.

Maybe we're used to stuffing it down and push through. See the section on how our nervous system works in this member vault.

Sometimes we are not in a position to do something like having a panic attack in our sleep.

This is one of many techniques I teach to help you come into the present time and space, pull you out of that disconnect. Aroma Reset also does that - connects you back to your whole self, mind, body, emotion.

Awareness Model

This is a standard model and I find it fascinating this is standard practice but is just short of resetting. Follow this to connect and then just take a deep breath if you don't have oils with you. You can also use any natural aroma source or botanical. Try an herbal tea bag, leaf off a tree or plant, or grass. Just a deep breathe pulls in aroma molecules floating in the air around us.

Perceived Safety and Our Nervous System

Rest assured fight / flight and freeze / numb are exactly how our nervous system is supposed to function. It is functioning as designed. Learning to tune in at the lowest levels is crucial to our mental, emotional and physical health because our mind / body / emotions are all part of the same system. They are interconnected and designed to work together.
